On Earth Day, we’re called to celebrate being good stewards of our natural resources and bring attention to the work we’re doing with our farmer-owners to better the world around us.
As a farmer-owned co-op, we take this hands-on, co-op model and apply it to some of the most challenging hurdles facing our enterprise as we innovate forward for the next 100 years.
We are focused on supporting and positioning our member-owners, farmers and ag retailers for success in this operating environment, future-proofing their businesses – and ours – while respecting their independence, privacy and their ability to make a living.
We have undertaken a number of initiatives within our business, both in our operations and in working with farmers, to reduce overall emissions and measure the outcomes of sustainability practices. Not to mention, we have an entire business unit dedicated to sustainability with Truterra, the only farmer-owned, farmer-driven food and ag sustainability program in the U.S. Truterra works with farmers and their trusted agronomy advisors, the ag retailer, to help farmers advance their sustainability.

Further in the spirit of tapping into what is happening at the farm level, we recently announced a commitment for all member-dairy farms to complete an on-farm sustainability assessment. This large-scale measurement project will yield more than 250 data points on fuel, electricity and water usage, nutrient application, crop rotation and manure management by 2025.

As concern for the planet and attention to climate change continues to increase, we view our farmer ownership and strategy of empowering the farmer as part of the solution, as an advantage for progress and critical to our mission of feeding human progress.
